Driving while talking on your phone is dangerous and possibly illegal

Mobile phone use has become a common part of our lives. Unfortunately pairing mobile phone use with driving an automobile has also become quite common. The combination is proving to be dangerous and auto accidents due to electronic distraction are on the rise. States are paying attention and many have passed or are planning to implement laws banning cell phone use while driving.

Speaking for us all, we can't stand when people are chatting it up behind the wheel. Yet many of us, cough..., are guilty of the crime. I can't tell you how many times I have cursed through the windshield at someone who was acting like a complete moron while talking and driving. I have even cursed at somebody because they were on the phone while driving while I was on the phone while driving. The irony is actually quite sad.

You might ask "What if I use a hands-free device?". Not so fast. Current research is proving that using a hands-free device is just as dangerous as holding the phone to your ear while driving. It's not the method but the distraction occupying the operators attention that is at fault. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

The available research indicates that whether it is a hands-free or hand-held cell phone, the cognitive distraction is significant enough to degrade a driver’s performance. This can cause a driver to miss key visual and audio cues needed to avoid a crash.

As an experiment or more like a reality check, find a nice safe place on the side of a busy road. Maybe bring along a soda and a snack. Sit there for a while and observe how many people are using their mobile phones while driving by. Feel free to comment below with your results.
